- High water use — EPA cites ~70 gallons per person per day indoor use as a typical upper reference; a single leaky toilet can add up to ~200 gallons/day. Spread laundry across the week.
- More people than the tank was sized for — bedroom-based design assumptions fail when adult children, renters, or long-term guests move in.
- Never pumped “and it seems fine” — EPA warns that can mean low use, a leaking tank, or solids already creeping toward the drainfield. Do not wait for a backup.

- Find tank size on the as-built / permit (county health or environmental department) or ask the pumper to measure.
- Count people who live there most of the year (not just bedrooms).

Is “every 3–5 years” wrong?
No — it is EPA’s general household range. Households with more people or smaller tanks often fall below three years; quiet two-person homes with large tanks can sit above five if inspections confirm low solids.
Do additives replace pumping?
EPA does not recommend relying on additives for domestic systems. Bacteria are already present; solvents or strong alkali products can harm the drainfield or groundwater. Pumping removes the solids additives cannot.
